The main wood of this keepsake box is sweet gum, which I harvested and milled myself. Sweet gum, also known as satin walnut, has a unique interlocked grain pattern and very interesting figure. Black walnut is the accent wood, featured in the miter keys, the lift-off lid, and the hand-turned lid pull. Several coats of hand-rubbed hard-wax oil, buffed to 4000 grit, provide a silky-smooth finish.
