Jewelry

Since the early days of human evolution, we have adorned ourselves with jewelry, clothing, body art, and other means.  On one level, such adornment might seem superfluous or vain.  But I wonder if it points to a deeper truth: the drive for creativity and beauty may be so hardwired into our souls that we will use our very bodies as the canvases for such expression.

The earrings, necklaces, and other jewelry we make in our shop stand in that wonderful legacy of human adornment, and they have a special kind of humble aesthetic.  Rather than requiring precious stones and metals that were mined at great expense to human and ecological life, Eden's Heart Woodworks jewelry features the sustainable, God-given beauty found in wood.  We look for unique pieces – most of them harvested and milled on our own property or nearby – and find ways to uncover and accentuate the wood’s natural loveliness.

We cannot compete on price with low-cost jewelry stamped out by factories or made overseas by underpaid labor, and we won’t try.  We do not mass-produce, and every single piece of jewelry we make is absolutely unique unto itself.  Each item takes a great deal of time to create: selecting the wood, milling and drying it for months or years, resawing it to proper thickness, laying out a pattern, then shaping, sanding, finishing, and assembling by hand.  We do this slow work with great care, as part of our commitment to the Benedictine value of ora et labora, prayer and work.  As you wear an item of jewelry from Eden's Heart Woodworks , we hope you’ll feel the love and mindful attention we’ve poured into it.
