Segmented Bowls - Single Species

These bowls start their lives as a flat piece of stock (single board or a glue-up) of a single species.  Then with specialized lathe tools, I cut concentric rings of precise thicknesses and angles (measured to the thousandths of an inch and tenth of a degree!).  These rings I then glue up in a stack to form the rough walls of the bowl, and from there the bowl goes back on the lathe for final shaping and sanding.  It's a painstaking process, but it eliminates a lot of wasted wood and it yields a gorgeous bowl.    

These bowls are finished with all-natural, non-toxic walnut oil.  They are food safe, although they should be hand-washed, and over time, repeated washings will eventually require renewed applications of finish.  Mineral oil or walnut oil can be easily reapplied, as with cutting boards
