These unique cremation urns evolved from my foray into lathe-turned segmented bowls. With a commission from my mom to make an urn for her and my stepdad, I wondered if it would be possible to adapt those bowl-making techniques to create a closed vessel for remains. After much experimentation and plenty of failures, I developed this design. All urns are created from locally-sourced hardwoods, sanded glass-smooth (the sanding alone takes almost an hour per urn), and feature a beautiful hand-rubbed oil finish. The urn opens from the bottom, which is securely fastened by three Phillips head screws. Round memorial plaques are available for the top of the urn, in the same or different wood species. All current models are a single standard size of 240 cubic inches (enough room for the remains of a 240-lb person), measuring approximately 11" high and 8" in diameter.
Current models are fashioned from single wood species. However, upon request, I can craft custom urns of varying sizes, and as with my line of segmented bowls, I can create designs with multiple wood species.
