Segmented Cremation Urn - Quartersawn Red Oak

This unique cremation urn is handcrafted from quartersawn red oak, which I harvested and milled myself.  Quartersawing requires extra labor in the milling process but yields straight-grained and stable lumber that features beautiful medullary ray flecks.  The urn design entails cutting perfect wedge-shaped segments, gluing them into rings, gluing these ring layers up to form the walls of the urn, then turning and sanding the urn to final shape on the lathe and adding a hand-rubbed oil finish. It's a very precise, time- and skill-intensive process, but it yields a gorgeous product.  The top can be custom-engraved for an extra fee. In terms of selecting a size, keep in mind that cremains require one cubic inch of urn capacity for every pound of body weight; for example a standard 220 cu. in urn can accommodate the cremains of a 220lb person.
